From July 16th the Algarve will host ‘Allgarve Gourmet’ a regional gastronomy event which will be officially inaugurated and held at Portimão’s museum, which has been awarded with the title of ‘Best Museum in Europe’.

The concept behind the month-long event is based on a series of live cooking demonstrations and sampling sessions, with food produced from Algarve-caught seafood and regional canned products, which a line-up of guest-chefs will reinvent and transform into tasty, trendy recipes. It will take place daily, from July 16th to 24th, from 19h00 to 24h00, offering the opportunity for members of the public to approach the chefs and interact with them.

The overall aim is to consolidate the Algarve as a gastronomy-rich destination, at the same time promoting regional and local produce as well as wines and spirits. It also aims to breathe new life into long-forgotten brands and products, as well as providing fresh ideas for using local fish and fish products which have been locally canned.

For the eight days of the event parts of Portimão Museum, a former canning factory, will be converted into a restaurant and gourmet lounge, and will also comprise a wine bar, beer bar, water bar, café area, dining and leisure area, and a mini-stage for concerts and DJs.

Entry fees range between €10 (two sample dishes plus wine, water and coffee) and €15 (four samples dishe, plus drinks, wine, water and coffee), and includes free entry to the rest of the museum.

Nineteen renowned chefs, amongst whom are Chef Francisco Ferreira, from the Vila Galé chain, Chef Paulo Morais, of Restaurante Umai, Lisbon, and Chef Luis Americo, of Restaurante Mesa, Oporto, will participate in the Allgarve Gourmet event, to be washed down with wine from exclusive Algarve producers.

After Portimão the Festival will relocate to Olhão (from 10th – 15th August), followed by the Cataplana Experience, in Vilamoura (from September 1st – 5th).

Other famous foodie-festivals to take place in the Algarve this summer under the Allgarve banner include Portimão’s sardine festival, and the Seafood Festival, in Olhão.
